FAQ
Billing and Credits
How service credits are charged, when to top up, and what a 402 response means.
API usage on Felo API Platform is prepaid. You buy USD-denominated service credits, and each request is deducted from that balance at the applicable rate.
How billing works
- A top-up purchases service credits, not a cash balance held by the platform.
- Credits are denominated in USD so charges can be expressed in dollars.
- Top-ups start at $1. No subscription is required.
- Credits are used only to offset platform API charges. They cannot be withdrawn or exchanged for cash.
- Completed top-ups are non-refundable, including unused credits, except where mandatory applicable law requires otherwise.
The same credit balance pays for model calls, Data API calls, and Felo API calls. You do not need a separate account or balance for each supplier.
What a request costs
The charge depends on the endpoint:
| Surface | Billing basis |
|---|---|
| Model API | Token rates for input, output, and caching, plus any billable tools; the channel's discount multiplier applies |
| Data API | The billing basis published for that endpoint, which may be per successful request, per returned item, or based on actual usage |
Felo APIs (/v2) | The rate for that workflow's output |
Model prices are shown per 1M tokens on the pricing page and on each model page. See Models and Pricing for the formula and worked estimate.
Check your balance and top up
Open Console Billing. The console shows your current credit balance, top-up amounts, and usage records. Available payment methods depend on your region and are shown at checkout.
The 402 response
A 402 means the balance does not cover the call:
{
"status": 402,
"code": "INSUFFICIENT_CREDITS",
"message": "...",
"request_id": "..."
}What to do:
- Check the balance in Console Billing.
- Top up.
- Resend the request. A 402 is not a rate limit, so waiting will not clear it.
For an async task, a 402 on submit means the task was never created. Check the task's status endpoint before resubmitting.
Billing versus rate limits
These are different limits:
- Credits limit how much you can spend. Running out returns 402.
- Rate limits limit how fast you can call. Exceeding one returns 429.
See Errors, Limits, and Retries for the 429 headers and retry rules.
Subscriptions and credits
API usage is always paid from service credits. The only subscription behavior described in these docs is the /v2/chat rate-limit exemption for accounts with an effective paid Felo subscription; it does not replace service credits.
